As We End the Month of September

Hello All,

We are excited for another week!  Students are still working on the Weather or Not project, which is due 16 October.  Students are learning about severe weather, atmospheric layers, weather instruments, and much more.  The class will be participating in severe weather stations and building their own weather instruments and the use those instruments to collect data.

Fourth grade is excited to kickoff blended learning in math!  This type of learning is student paced and allows for teachers to pull students in small groups to further cement the content.  Be sure to ask your child about what stations they completed during math enrichment!  The fourth grade teachers grade enjoyed designing lessons and stations that fits your child's interests while they will be learning the curriculum.

The class has started reviewing figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, and onomatopoeia).  The class is pulling both English Language Arts and Science together to complete a choice menu that uses figurative language to explain the Water Cycle and will be presenting their creations this Friday, October 2.

We wanted to share this great opportunity with our fourth grade families.  This provides fourth graders and  their families the chance to visit America's national parks, federal lands and waters free of charge.  The link provides further information on this White House initiative:  Every Kid in the Park.  If you and your family do take advantage of this awesome opportunity, please take a photograph of you and your family at your location and email to Ms. Grimm or Ms. Saullo.

If you did not have a chance to attend Parent/Teacher Conferences last week, do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher so that a date and time to meet can be scheduled.

What's New in the Classroom?

We have started another week and began the newest project in the PBL Classroom, Weather or Not!  There are multiple components to this project and we will be completely finished with the project on 16 October.  Below are the rubrics for the group aspect and the score sheet for the station components included in the unit.  These have been reviewed with the students so they are aware what is required of them to earn an A.

In math, we are working on Place Values and will be testing on Monday, 28 September.  Study guides will be given this Thursday for students to complete by Friday for 5 bonus points on their test and then they will have the entire weekend to study.

In English Language Arts, students are working on homophones and will have a quiz Friday.  They are also working on editing passages with correct capitalization and punctuation while learning about tornadoes, this will be tested on Friday as well.

We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to those parents and students who attended Open House last Thursday!  We also would like to say, "A job well done," to all of the fourth grade students who presented on AVID, we are very proud of you!

Just a reminder that the fourth grade has a policy pertaining to students changing their shoes for physical education and recess.  Students are not to do so because it takes time from the instructional period, which is vital to your child's education.  With AVID, students write in their agenda what global they have each day so that they are able to wear the appropriate attire on the day it is needed.  We greatly appreciate your understanding pertaining to this.

Hello All,

We are enjoying our time in the classrooms.  Students are settling in nicely in fourth grade and continuing to work on the classroom procedures daily.  There are a lot of things coming up that are very exciting.

Students have been working on their first two PBL project, I Am Awesome and We the Citizens.  We will be presenting our completed work this upcoming week!  After the presentations we will begin the Weather or Not project and focus on science.  In math we are finishing up Topic 1 (Multiplication and Division) and will have our first unit test on Monday and then will be jumping into Topic 3 (Generate and Analyze Patterns).  Fourth grade will also be completing their Math MAP Testing on Tuesday, 15th September, so please ensure that your child gets good sleep on Monday night.

On Tuesday, 15 September, Mrs. Rodriguez will be hosting Family Literacy University from 6:00 - 7:00 P.M.  On Thursday, 17 September, Pontiac will be holding Open House form 6:00 - 7:30 P.M.  We would love for you to attend if possible!

We had a wonderful time at the Lexington County Museum and are extremely grateful for our volunteers!
